How to Set Up a Freelance Business

Interested in working online as a web designer, virtual assistant, or as some other type of creative? Here’s exactly how to set up a freelance business that will allow you to work from home and take care of yourself.

Step One: Choose the Name of Your Business

Before you do anything else, one of the very first steps of setting up a freelance business is choosing the name of your company. Whether or not you’re going to legally register your business or anything like that, it’s still important to choose a name. Check out this post to get some ideas on how to name your business.

Step Two: Get a Domain Name and Hosting

Once you’ve settled on a name for your business, it’s time to put it into use. Buy the domain name for it! (It can be helpful to make sure that the name of your business is actually available to purchase as a domain name before you settle on it for sure.)

You can also take this opportunity to purchase a hosting plan, which you will definitely need if you are going to be using WordPress.com to build your site. We recommend NameCheap for domain names and hosting.

For more information on the ins and outs of domain names and hosting, refer to our guide on How to Build and Launch Your Own Site.

Step Three: Set Up Your Social Media Accounts

Using that same name you chose in Step One, you’ll want to sign up for all the major social media channels and start interacting in your niche! (Another hint: You’ll also want to check and see if your name is taken on social media before you 100% decide on a business name, but this is less important than the domain name being available.)

Step Four: Design Your Website

We cover this in detail in our guide on How to Build and Launch Your Own Site, but basically you’ll need to choose a theme, create a logo and color scheme, and add some graphical elements to your side. You also might want to think about the design of your sidebar (if you have one), and the UX (user experience) of your site’s layout.

Step Five: Marketing Your New Business

When learning how to set up a freelance business, one of the biggest things to focus on is marketing. Marketing is super important, especially as a new business. You’ll need to learn about the different types of marketing and decide what your business is going to focus on. For example, you could focus on social media marketing and dominate your niche on Facebook and Instagram. Or you could choose to focus on content marketing and create really amazing blog posts to wow your potential customers. Other popular types of marketing include SEO, paid advertising, email marketing, video, and guest posting.
